How To Back Up XP Registry

Why back up XP registry

Before you go on and clean up your PC registry, it is vital you back up the current registry settings.

Most registry cleaners being third-party utilities, there is a possibility, even if you use the best registry software, that an important file gets deleted by accident.

I generally recommend that you get registry cleaners that offer registry back up features. Not all do.

How to back up XP registry

Having said that here is a few simple steps on how to back up your registry:

  1. Open the 'Run' box from your Start menu.

  2. Typing regedit, then enter

  3. This will open the registry. Make sure you select 'my computer' on the left window.

  4. On the menu bar, click on File - Export. This will open a save dialogue box. I recommend you save the registry on a usb flash or on a remove drive.

  5. Close your registry window.

  6. Try and open, using notepad, the saved registry to make sure it was succesfully done.

Now that you have one backup registry version, you can go on and run your registry cleaner.
